Singita

Singita Boulders Lodge

Boulders Lodge has a contemporary air of tranquillity that honors Africa in an authentic way. Inspiring the name Boulders was an enormous boulder that sat right in the middle of the place where the wine cellar was to be built. A simple decision was made to build the cellar around the boulder!

Guests can enjoy wrap-around views from most parts of the natural stone lodge, and the lookout deck offers the perfect spot from which to observe wildlife drawn to the Sand River. The quiet pond alongside the thatched lounge area allows the light and the landscape inside to the wide open spaces, where straw baskets, neutral shades and textured fabrics complement wooden furniture.

A colonial feel with Egyptian linen, African throws, antiques and modern luxuries combine to create a homely, lived-in feel. Perhaps this is where the notion of an ‘armchair safari’ was perfected…

With 5000 hectares of wild bush in this private concession within the world-renowned Kruger National Park, you can go exploring off-road and follow the footsteps of the leopard, track down a herd of elephant or simply wait for them to come to you.

Tinga Lodge has nine private suites, making it a very personal experience. Tinga exudes the atmosphere of a classic safari lodge. The thatched cathedral-like entrance leads through to the colonial comfort of the lounge, which opens onto the massive wooden deck overlooking the Sabie River. Built around an enormous Jackalberry tree which is reputed to be over 200 years old, the deck affords magnificent views of the Sabie River, and regular sightings of the resident wildlife, including members of the Big Five.

Our staff are often called mind readers, sometimes saints and quite frequently invited to go back home with our guests (an invitation which they politely decline). They make it possible for guests to surrender, with every need taken care of and the guests’ comfort their first priority.

Life at Tinga has a timeless quality, where you can get lost in a moment, and take the time to really explore this piece of Africa on the banks of the Sabie River. Perfectly situated on the ocean’s edge, a brief 5 minutes walk from Umhlanga Village Centre, the Oyster Box Hotel is conveniently located for quick and easy access to Afro-chic Durban city centre, International Airports and numerous stylish shopping centres…yet has a feeling of classical charm and elegance like nowhere else on earth.

Tswalu

110,000 hectares of spectacular grasslands and mountains, South Africa’s largest private game reserve

Tswalu falls within the arid savanna biome of southern Africa and has three main habitats – dunes, plains and Korannaberg mountains. The presence of these mountains form a huge basin which acts as a natural rainfall catchment. This provides a healthy water table and encourages a large, successful diversity of life – with about 80 species of mammals and 240 species of birds. The main focus of the Tswalu Kalahari tourism experience is to expose guests to the wonders of the Kalahari ecosystem. Our guides are encouraged to explore all aspects of this ecosystem including plant life, insects, birds, reptiles and the smaller mammals and to help our guests to understand the importance of conservation with particular reference to Tswalu’s vast and unique wilderness. Rare and endangered species. While Tswalu is home to most of the “charismatic” African big game species such as lion, cheetah, wild dog, desert black rhino and buffalo, Tswalu has developed into a vast area of unique biodiversity and natural beauty which offers safe haven to a number of rare and endangered species, including pangolin, aardvark, aardwolf, African wild dog, rare antelope such as roan, sable and tsessebe and endangered raptors.

The Motse, lies at the foot of the Korannaberg mountains facing westwards across the grasslands of the Kalahari. Motse means “village” in Tswana, and our village consists of just nine spacious and secluded “legae” (Tswana for “little house”).

Settled between two mountain ranges, Tarkuni is the Oppenheimer family’s own personal home here at Tswalu and offers a complete oasis of serenity.

No more than 30 guests at a time can discover the beauty of this arid savannah, its diverse wildlife and the serenity of what may well be South Africa’s last great wilderness.

Gorah Elephant Camp

Luxurious camp in Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape

Gorah Elephant Camp offers high standards of accommodation and service. Due to its location directly at a waterhole, even Gorah’s veranda is excellent for watching herds of elephants, which pass by or come for a drink.

Even to a casual visitor, Gorah is clearly a good lodge run to high standards. At its heart, its central manor house is very historic, like a small stately home in the middle of the national park. Some will find this history intimidating; others will love it! Gorah’s tents are large, luxurious and about as formal as you can make a tent feel – but somehow they still feel incongruous next to the manor. If you can get over that, then it’s a lovely place to stay.

Gorah Elephant Camp consists of 11 tented suites beneath thatched canopies, all spacious and highly comfortable – and in many ways very different in character to the manor house. Each of the palatial tents has got a double bed or two singles, ceiling fans, a sitting area, an en-suite bathroom, which comes with a hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers and Charlotte Rhys body products, and a private deck. All rooms offer complimentary sherry and the possibility of in-house communication.

The communal areas of Gorah Elephant Camp center around the historic manor house and contain a library of books donated by guests, a small curio shop, a lounge, dining areas, a veranda overlooking the waterhole and the plains and a swimming pool.

Relax with a book from Gorah Elephant Camp’s library by the large lounge’s fireplace or enjoy a tea on the veranda while watching elephants gather at the waterhole in front of the main house.

You can dine in the candle-lit dining room, which offers panoramic views over the Addo plains, or by the crackling log fire in the al-fresco dining area.

Victoria Falls, Zambia & Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, Zambia & Zimbabwe

One of the greatest attractions in Africa and one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.

Victoria Falls is located on the Zambezi River, the fourth largest river in Africa, which is also defining the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers, while the spray and mist from the falling water is rising to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers.
The national border between Zambia and Zimbabwe lies midstream, and national parks of both nations exist on either side of the Zambezi. The gorges and cliffs below the falls in these parks are prime territory for raptors, including falcons and black eagles.

Interestingly, during the dry season the water level in the Zambezi River drops sharply, and it becomes possible to walk through some parts of the waterfall.

Devil’s Pool

While it looks as if some visitors to Victoria Falls are flirting with disaster, swimming in the Devil’s Pool is not quite as dangerous as it looks, thanks to an underwater lip. Located on the Zambia side of the falls, the pool is only accessible during the dry season from August to January.

Zambia & Zimbabwe are now one of Africa’s most urbanised countries, much of the country remains wild, underdeveloped and unspoilt, with a great percentage of land allocated by the government to conservation projects, national parks and game management areas. Many of these parks are home to incredible numbers of Africa’s most-feted wild mammals and extraordinary birdlife.

Few places in the world possess the beauty and style of the historic and culturally vibrant city of Cape Town.

The city shelters beneath the majestic backdrop of Table Mountain, which is flanked by the landmarks of Devils Peak, Lions Head and Signal Hill. Possibly every visit to Cape Town should commence with a journey in the revolving cable car up to the summit of Table Mountain – the breathtaking views across the region are a superb way to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings.
On the eastern side of Table Mountain sits the beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Devoted almost exclusively to indigenous plants, these gardens are amongst the most beautiful in the world. The Sunday afternoon music concerts held here have become a Cape Town institution and are well worth a visit. The city itself offers a host of sights and activities, including wonderful Art Deco and Victorian architecture, interesting museums, great shopping, superb restaurants, live music (Jazz is a specialty), theatres and night-clubs.
For a deeper insight into the past, present and future of South Africa take a guided tour of the Cape Flats townships and Robben Island. The ferry for Robben Island departs from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront and once on the island an ex prisoner will guide you around this infamous prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Visit the spectacular Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and enjoy awesome scenery, fantastic walks and deserted beaches. As part of this day trip, stop off at Boulders Beach and meet the colony of 3000 African penguins. A short journey out either side of the city center will take you along pristine coastlines where you can relax on white sand beaches or, in season, catch sightings of Southern right and humpback whales. Just a one hour drive inland will take you to the Western Cape Winelands where you can visit charming vineyards for cellar tours and wine tasting.
